Background and history of solar energy
In the last 60 years, the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased due to the actions of Mankind. The generalised use of fossil fuels, the weakening of the ozone layer and the disappearance of large areas of forest are causing the temperatures on earth to rise, which is producing an uncertain future for coming generations. All of this is forcing us to turn to solar energy, a clean, inexhaustible resource that is simple to install, has an extended useful life and can be easily adapted to both rural and city environments.
Spain has a privileged location for using solar energy, reason for which the different administrations are organising initiatives that enable any interested person or company to contribute towards generating electricity through photovoltaic solar energy and water heating using thermal solar energy.
We can now start to play a central role in the sustainable development of our planet, taking advantage of a resource that is not only clean and inexhaustible, but also very profitable, such as solar energy, which helps to reduce greenhouse gases and dependency on fossil fuels as well as saving energy and contributing towards the goals set down in the Kyoto Protocol within the UN Framework Agreement on Climate Change of 1997 and the targets set by the European Union for 2020.
